BOOM Esports Dota 2 Team Review
BOOM is an esports “tiger” hailing from Indonesia. While they’re far from new to the esports world, their history has been made in the last few years. Originally founded by a Counter-Strike fan, the club decided to close its BOOM Esports CS2 roster in 2021 and focus exclusively on Dota.
The BOOM team has many glorious victories under its belt. After experiencing a period of territorial experimentation (during the 2023 downturn, the team switched regions to South Africa), the club is now back competing on its home turf in Asia. MelBet Pick’em Esports Review explains how BOOM managed to return to form.
BOOM History
BOOM revealed themselves to the world over eight years ago. The club’s founding date is considered to be December 15, 2016, but the first Dota roster was assembled in January 2017. This was a period of active esports in South Asia, and the Indonesian scene was ripe for a new leader. According to founder Gary Ongko Putera, his dream was to make BOOM a “Real Madrid” among Dota 2 teams.
The team’s peak success came in 2022 – victories in world-class competitions, serious competition with top global teams, and a solid performance at TI. But the decline was swift – in 2023, the team’s ratings plummeted. Today, the BOOM esports Dota 2 team is experiencing a second renaissance, and many even believe they are capable of breaking their own records from three years ago.
BOOM Founders
The club’s founder and longtime leader is Indonesian marketing and management specialist Gary “Natshuba” Ongko Putera. He is also a keen video game enthusiast. The club is funded by private Indonesian investors. In addition to Putera, the management team also includes hired managers: Marzarian “owljan” Sahita oversees operations, and Nathan “Nate” Weeks (from the Philippines) leads the BOOM esports Dota 2 team.
BOOM Initial Roster
Although founder Gary Putera’s heart was in CS, he initially created BOOM Esports as a multidisciplinary organization. Therefore, a Dota 2 roster was formed within the first month of the team’s inception. For the first four and a half years, the team was entirely mono-national, so the initial roster was composed of Indonesians:
- Randy Muhammad “Dreamocel” Sapoetra;
- Muhammad Rizky “inYourdreaM” Anugrah;
- Doly Van Pelo “SaintDeLucaz” Sihotang;
- “SnowbaLL” (name unknown);
- Rizki “Varizh” Varizh.
The team performed well at the Indonesian regional level. Right off the bat, BOOM won the Indonesia Games Championship 2017 (Tier 3), earning their first prize money, and also took first place in the Indonesia Pride Gaming League. However, the lineup never quite made it to the level of competing against serious opponents on the international stage.
Roster changes began within the first few months. Dreamocel was the longest-serving member of the starting lineup, remaining in the BOOM esports roster until 2021.
BOOM Current Roster
After a period of turbulent roster changes in 2024, the BOOM esports Dota 2 roster has finally stabilized. As of October 2025, the team consists of:
- Timothy “TIMS” Randrup – Captain (rejoined 2024);
- Souliya “JaCkky” Khoomphetsavong (joined 2024);
- Jaunuel “Jaunuel” Arcilla (joined 2024);
- Armel Paul “Armel” Tabios (joined 2025);
- Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong (joined 2025).
This is a strong unit – for example, Armel and JabZ, newcomers to the team, are strong veterans of the professional scene, having previously played for Aurora (and Armel, also for Team Secret). The lineup is led by TIMS, a player from that same “golden era,” the time of their major achievements, including participation in TI 2022.
Interestingly, the roster no longer includes a single player from Indonesia (the nationalities of the members are the Philippines, Thailand, and Laos). The team is coached by Chai “Mushi” Yee Fung from Malaysia, a veteran of the Dota 2 scene with over 15 years of experience and a former member of Fnatic.
The team has successfully qualified for global tournaments, including The International, although they haven’t yet taken the top spots. For example, in 2024, the team managed to take third place in the prestigious Elite League Season 2. And in 2025, the BOOM Dota 2 unit took first place in two consecutive Southeast Asia Closed Qualifiers for DreamLeague, even beating The MongolZ.
BOOM Tournament Achievements
For the past three years, the Dota 2 BOOM team has been at its peak, albeit with significant fluctuations in the rankings, from the very bottom of Tier 2 to Tier 1. Here are their main achievements:
- 1st place at GAMERS GALAXY: Invitational Series Dubai 2022 – Tier 1 ($105,000+);
- 5-6 place at PGL Wallachia Season 1, 2024 – Tier 1 ($60,000);
- 3rd place at Elite League Season 2 – Tier 2 ($72,000).
The team also took several prize places in the Dota Pro Circuit SEA 2021/2022, which earned them a spot in Major tournaments in 2022, including The International. TI 11 (2022) proved to be the Boom Dota squad’s most successful tournament – they actually entered the world’s top ten, finishing 9th-12th and earning over $312,000 in prize money.
BOOM Legends
The roots of BOOM Dota 2’s success go back to the team’s very inception, in February 2018. It was then that Indonesian player Saieful “Fbz” Ilham joined the young team, which was just celebrating its first year of existence. He deserves to be called a true BOOM Esports legend: loyal to the roster, he spent over five years in the lineup, participating in both TI 2022 and DPC SEA 2021/2022.
Fbz plays position three – as an offlaner. Combining incredible reliability with highly effective, aggressive, and assertive attacks, and mastering a wide hero lineup, this BOOM Dota 2 player has become a true pillar of the team. Today, Fbz plays for the niche Indonesian team REKONIX.
BOOM Upcoming Tournament
BOOM’s next Tier 1 Dota 2 tournaments challenge is DreamLeague Season 27 (December 2025). There, the team will once again test its strength against the world’s top teams. The BOOM ID Dota 2 squad failed to qualify for Seasons 22-24, but the lineup made it through Seasons 25 and 26, finishing only 13th-14th. However, there has been progress, so there’s hope that the Indonesian club will show a better result this time around.
FAQ
BOOM ID (as they were originally called) formed in the winter of 2016–2017. The CS and Dota 2 rosters were also formed at that time. Their first participation in Dota tournaments took place in April 2017, on the regional Indonesian scene.
After the spring 2025 replacements, the BOOM esports Dota 2 roster is as follows: Souliya “JaCkky” Khoomphetsavong, Armel Paul “Armel” Tabios, Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong, Timothy “TIMS” Randrup and Jaunuel “Jaunuel” Arcilla (valid for October 2025).
Ensigame ranks BOOM 21st globally and 3rd in South Asia, behind Talon Esports and Execration. The team is 18th in the Escorenews rankings and 17th in the ESL Pro Tour leaderboard.
For the past year, the captain’s position has been held by Timothy “TIMS” Randrup, a Filipino player who plays position four. His signature style is an aggressive one, which is not typically found in leaders. Before joining BOOM, TIMS played for TNC Predator.
The current coach of the BOOM ID Dota team is 34-year-old Chai “Mushi” Yee Fung, who joined the club in 2021. He is an extremely experienced player, having played for numerous regional South Asian teams as well as top European teams. He is assisted by Adam “343” Shah, a former Fnatic player and coach.
