Team Liquid Dota 2 Team Review

Why exactly “Liquid” and what does the blue horse have to do with it, probably even the team members won’t say. Everyone knows only one thing — Team Liquid can safely be called one of the greatest eSports organizations. Having real masters in CS 2, League of Legends, Heartstone in its composition, it was Dota 2 and their two victories at The International that really made them famous.

How a project that started as a news portal about StarCraft managed to turn into the legendary Team Liquid Dota 2 and become the highest paid eSports team — we figure it out in this MelBet Pick’em review.

Team Liquid History

It would be hard to find an organization with a longer history than Team Liquid (their competitors are probably only Ninjas in Pyjamas). This year, the club founded at the dawn of the millennium in Utrecht, the Netherlands, celebrates its 25th anniversary. The Dota 2 Team Liquid roster was the second permanent lineup for the club, and today there are as many as 17 of them! Over the years, the team began to play Hearthstone, PUBG, Fortnite, FIFA and real chess.

Team Liquid’s pride, in addition to Dota tournaments, is the victory of their CS roster at ESL One Cologne 2019, and multiple championships at StarCraft WCS Global Finals.

Team Liquid Founders

The history of “Liquid” begins in the distant year 2000, with Victor “Nazgul” Goossens and the creation of the StarCraft news portal of the same name by him and his friends. Time passed, a forum was added to the site, and a community grew around the forum. In 2010, Victor Goossens and friends organized the first StarCraft 2 eSports team (this is how Team Liquid began), and in 2012 the Dota Team Liquid roster was revealed to the world.

Three years later, Team Curse (a League of Legend team) will join Team Liquid, and their leader, Steve “LiQuiD112” Arhanset, will share the CEO position with Victor Goossens. Today, the club is owned by the American investment organization aXiomatic Gaming. This allows Team Liquid to try itself in new types of eSports and act globally around the world — from Brazil to Indonesia. However, the CEOs are still Victor Goossens and Steve Arhancet.

Team Liquid Initial Roster

Those who first appeared on the world Dota 2 arena under the Team Liquid logo were not newcomers at all. The club bought this roster from the truly legendary American team Complexity in December 2012. With new management, the team showed growth in the first year. Team Liquid’s first performance at TI allowed them to knock out many of the then top Dota 2 teams and take 7th-8th place.

Here is the original Team Liquid Dota 2 roster in 2012-2013. It was made up entirely of American players:

  1. Kanishka “BuLba” Sosale (IGL)
  2. Brian “FLUFFNSTUFF” Lee
  3. Michael “ixmike88” Ghannam
  4. Steven “Korok” Ashworth
  5. Tyler “TC” Cook

Yes, this lineup played for no more than a year (although BuLba would return to the team for a short time 2 years later), but it was this lineup that laid the foundation for one of the most famous Dota 2 teams in history back in 2012.

Team Liquid Current Roster

Team Liquid’s Dota roster has seen many changes over the years. The team was even put on hiatus in 2015. However, each time, Team Liquid returns with new talent and a new approach — and very often, they are accompanied by tremendous success. Currently, the Team Liquid Dota 2 roster 2025 consists of:

  1. Michael “miCKe” Vu — IGL (joined 2019);
  2. Aydin “iNSaNiA” Sarkohi (joined 2019);
  3. Samuel “Boxi” Svahn (joined 2019);
  4. Michał “Nisha” Jankowski (joined 2022);
  5. Jonas “SabeRLight-” Volek (joined 2024).

24-year-old SabeRLight from the Czech Republic is the youngest among Team Liquid Dota 2 players — in every sense. However, he has a good background: he is a former member of Ninja in Pyjamas.

Training is carried out by three people — Mathis “Jabbz” Friesel, Damien “kpii” Chok Sau-jing, and the head coach, William “Blitz” Lee, a 35-year-old pro from the USA, whose start with Team Liquid took place back in 2016. He returned to coaching with the arrival of the current key roster — captain miCKe and others. This gang took bronze at TI11, crushed TI13, and this year has already managed to take two golds and one bronze at PGL Wallachia 3, 4 and 5.

Team Liquid Tournament Achievements

Listing all the achievements of Team Liquid Dota 2 takes more than one page. At The International alone, the team won two golds (2017, 2024), silver (2019) and bronze (2022). Only OG and Team Spirit can compare here, also having two victories in their portfolio.

Apart from TI, we can’t help but mention other Tier 1 tournaments:

  • EPICENTER 2016 и EPICENTER 2017 ($250,000 и $250,000)
  • China Dota 2 Supermajor 2018 ($555,000)
  • StarLadder i-League StarSeries Season 3, 2017) ($135,000)
  • ESL One Germany 2020 ($150,000)

While it’s hard to get excited about anything after the $10,000,000+ prize at The International 2017, it’s worth mentioning the team’s recent silver at Riyadh Masters 2023, which netted the team $2,500,000 in prize money. The tournament is now Team Liquid’s third-highest-grossing tournament of all time.

Team Liquid Legends

There are many great names on the roster of the great Dota team, but the real legend, without exaggeration, is Neta “33” Shapira, the architect of Tundra Esports’ greatness. He came to Team Liquid during the crisis times of Tundra, in the fall of 2023, and the following year he added his second gold at The International to his track record. Shapira chose to return to Tundra, but he is truly the greatest master. Behind him are more than 1000 matches, one hundred and fifty tournaments and millions of dollars in prize money.

Team Liquid Upcoming Tournaments

To find out where Team Liquid will appear next, just open the Tier 1 Tournaments Dota 2 list. The top world team, of course, will not miss a single global event. The main challenge of this year for the team is to defend their title at the new TI. It will take place this September. Before that, OG Team managed to defend their gold only once. You can also watch Team Liquid in action this fall at BLAST Slam 4. However, you can always find out about the Dota 2 Liquid next match on the team’s official website.

FAQ

2012, if we’re talking about Dota 2. That’s when the Dutch StarCraft club “Team Liquid” decided it was time to expand — and included the former US team compLexity in its roster. Since then, for 13 years now, Team Liquid has been primarily associated with Dota 2.

The core of the team is three Swedish esportsmen who have been playing since 2019, former Alliance members: Michael “miCKe” Vu — IGL, Aydin “iNSaNiA” Sarkohi, Samuel “Boxi” Svahn, as well as the younger generation — Pole Michał “Nisha” Jankowski and Czech Jonas “SabeRLight-” Volek.

The team’s current position in ESL Pro Tour Season 3 (in August 2025) is 5th place and 8630 points. They were put here by the silver medal at ESL One Bangkok 2024. Escore news also put the team in fifth place with a result of 1270 points. But the team Ensigame was rated the highest — third place, after Spirit and Parivision.

The current captain of Team Liquid Dota 2 is Michael “miCKe” Vu, a Swedish carry and mid player. Along with Boxi and Insania, he is one of the longest-serving players on Team Liquid today, having been on the roster for almost 6 years.

The head Team Liquid Dota 2 coach is William “Blitz” Lee from the USA. He is assisted by German analyst Mathis “Jabbz” Friesel, and, more recently, by assistant coach, Australian Damien “kpii” Chok Sau-jing.
