The recent major CS2 2025 update on October 23rd not only added the much-talked-about trade up knife system, but also brought back Retake mode. Those who played CS:GO may be familiar with it, but the returned CS2 Retake mode has some changes. Therefore, in this MelBet Pick’em review, we’ll take a detailed look at this mode. What is Retake Mode in CS2?

CS2 Retake mode is Valve’s official training format. Rounds begin with a planted bomb, and teams must fight for control of the bombsite. In Retake mode 2025, three T-side players defend a planted bombsite from four Counter-Terrorists. The T-side’s goal is to defend the bombsite and prevent the bomb from being defusal. The Counter-Terrorists, on the other hand, aim to capture the bombsite and, most importantly, defuse the bomb within 40 seconds.

There is no economy in this mode. All weapons, armor, and grenades are awarded through the Retake Card system, which we’ll discuss later. As for the mode as a whole, it may be of interest to those who want to practice post-plant situations, team coordination, and utility.

Historical Background

The mode itself is nothing new. Retake mode history in CS2 and CS:GO originates from a custom modification created by community enthusiasts. However, after its popularity grew significantly, Valve finally decided to officially implement the mode. It was first introduced as part of Operation Broken Fang, which was released on December 3, 2020. Then, in an update on May 4, 2021, Retake CS:GO was moved to the War Games category.

After being an official mode for just over two years, Retake was removed with the release of Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023. From then on, it remained available only on the CS2 Retake servers. This was, to put it mildly, inconvenient, as over 90% of players never join unofficial servers.

How to Play Retake Mode in CS2

Playing this mode is now no more difficult than any other. Inconvenient CS2 Retake servers are a thing of the past! Now, simply launch the game, open the Play menu at the top of the screen, and select the Retakes tab in the Matchmaking section.

Match Rules and Mechanics

All rules and mechanics of Retake mode CS2 are based on simulating the moment after the bomb is planted. To focus players’ attention on the retake mechanics, the mode has no economy. We’ve summarized the main parameters in one concise table:

Looking at the scenario in more detail, the T-side spawns immediately at the bombsite’s defensive positions. Meanwhile, the CT-side spawns at predetermined points around the bombsite. This closely simulates the real-life retake process.

Also worth noting is the freeze phase in Retake mode. It lasts 7 seconds and allows players time to select a Loadout Card, assess their positions, and plan their round strategy. For CTs, this is time to assign roles and entry points. For T-sides, it’s time to adjust positions, prepare nades, and determine who will play the near or far corner.

The updated CS2 Retake 2025 mode features nine Defusal maps. The spawns on the CS2 maps are specifically adapted for Retake, taking into account the balance between the T- and CT-sides, as well as the defusal time.

The maps themselves are also divided into two familiar groups: Defusal Group Alpha and Defusal Group Delta. You can’t choose just one or two specific maps; only one of the two groups can be selected. At the end of the match, a vote will be held to select the map for the next match.

Defusal Group Alpha

  1. Dust 2: Great for grenade practice and micro-positioning. Site B requires synchronization and smoke targeting the window and tunnel. Site A requires practicing Short and Long entry timing.
  2. Mirage: The main training ground for Retake mode. Great for practicing flashes and molotovs on Default and Tetris.
  3. Inferno: One of the most disciplined maps in Retake. B-scenarios through Banana and CT-Spawn require flawless communication.
  4. Vertigo: The vertical structure of this map forces CTs to work together perfectly. Any mistake when entering through Scaffold or Stairs instantly ruins the retake.

Defusal Group Delta

  1. Train: On this CS2 map, every corner is exposed to crossfire, making positioning crucial. Good communication is 50% of success here.
  2. Anubis: A relatively new map. Its narrow passages and dense choke zones make grenades crucial.
  3. Ancient: A tactical masterpiece of CS2, Retake. Success on this map is determined by controlling Donut and Mid Entry.
  4. Overpass: An optimal choice for practicing defensive coordination. Heaven and CT-Spawn offer huge viewing angles.
  5. Nuke: The most unique and multi-layered map in CS2. Two levels (Upper and Lower) require a complete understanding of the synchronization between Ramp and Secret.

CS2 Retake Cards System Explained

Instead of the usual economy, this mode features Retake cards. This is a rather unique gameplay mechanic where, instead of purchasing weapons and grenades, players choose loadout cards. Each of these cards contains a pre-set set of equipment and grenades. The card distribution mechanic is divided into four stages, depending on the round. The number of cards to choose from also varies – from one in the first round to four starting from the fourth.

Also worth noting is the presence of body armor. They aren’t present in every round, and where they are, their HP is random, ranging from 60 to 80.

MVP Cards are also worth mentioning. They can be obtained in all rounds except the first. They are awarded to the player who became the MVP in the previous round. The card itself differs only in the presence of an additional grenade.

Advanced Retake Strategies

Each of CS2’s game modes has its own strategies. CS2 Retake mode is no exception; in fact, it’s even more strategically driven due to the fast pace of the action. It also doesn’t allow for the opportunity to compensate for mistakes with eco rounds. Each round is like a very fast-paced micro-scenario, and we’ve prepared several strategies to help you win more often in CS2 Retake mode.

CT Side Tactics

The CT team in CS2 Retake mode is always in a vulnerable position. The main problem is that they have less time (40 seconds). Therefore, the key to victory is cooperation, and here are three main tips:

  1. Sync flash entry: the key to a successful retake is coordinated flash entry. Ideally, one player throws a well-timed “pop flash” while their teammates move into the explosion. This way, you can neutralize most of the T-side’s defensive positions and win the first contact without losing players.
  2. Incendiary grenades on Default / New Box / Dark: knowing the pre-nade spots can help you win significantly more often. Incendiary grenades simultaneously deal damage and force the Terrorists out of favorable positions, disrupting their post-plant setup. On some maps, a good grenade throw from a far angle can completely clear a plant without direct contact.
  3. Using smokes to block vision: smokes aren’t always suitable for defusing in this mode. However, they are ideal for cutting off information in Retake CS2 mode. A smoke thrown on Default, Stairs, or Banana cuts off the T-side from information, creating a temporary advantage for an escape.

Terrorist Defense Techniques

For the T-side in Retake mode, the goal is the opposite: slow down, confuse, and destroy the CTs’ tempo. They don’t need to win by gunfire. It’s enough to stall for time, maintaining space, and here are a few tips for this:

  1. Post-plant crossfires: the T-side’s main strength is a proper crossfire structure. Players should be positioned so that each corner is mutually controlled. Ideal position pairings are Tetris and Sandwich on Mirage, and New Box and Dark on Inferno.
  2. Timing and position trading: in Retake CS2, time is the T-side’s ally. Every shot, grenade, and CT move should be met with a counter trade. After each contact, it’s best to switch positions. This can disrupt CT aiming habits and timing.
  3. Delayed grenades to slow down a push: experienced players use the delay utility – throwing flashbangs and smokes only after CTs have already begun retaking. This delay disrupts the attack’s tempo and forces CTs to waste seconds making mistakes.
  4. Controlled aggression when outnumbered: in 3v1 or 4v2, don’t go on the defensive. The best players practice controlled aggression. They take up a new dominant position (for example, exiting Palace on Mirage or peeking from Short on Dust2) and reduce the number of possible attack paths for CTs. This forces the enemy to play a guessing game, which clearly doesn’t benefit them.

Conclusion – Why Retake Is the Future of CS2 Practice

The return of Retake Mode has been positively received by players. While many haven’t yet played it due to the increased interest in knife trade-ups, the mode is truly worthy. It’s ideal for practicing a variety of skills, from shooting and positioning to coordination and utility use.

Furthermore, some players have already peeked at the CS2 code and noticed that Retake CS2 mode is built into the weekly missions. So Valve is clearly interested in increasing interest in these types of gaming formats – which is certainly a good thing!

The Retake Cards system was created to replace the traditional economy. At the start of each round, players must select a loadout card with a predetermined selection of weapons and grenades. Cards are divided into four types depending on the round. The top player from the previous round also receives an MVP card with an additional grenade.

The Deathmatch game mode places emphasis on shooting and reflexes. Retake CS2, on the other hand, focuses more on developing gameplay skills, communication, and tactical understanding of the map. You need to act quickly and coordinate your actions!
